Takes the Train

A plastic arm fell through the fireworks. It fell on top of a night train that rumbled through town. It was a right arm. It had a right hand.

The hand couldn’t see the train, but it could sure feel the clackety-clack.

Every once in a while the train went faster. Then the wheels went clatyclack. When the train went the fastest, there was just a clack.

The arm and the hand tapped out the rhythm.

Clackety-clack, clackety-clack, clackety-clack,

Clatyclack, clatyclack, clatyclack,

Clack, clack,

Clackety-clack,

Clatyclack,

Clack, clack, clack!

The arm and the hand were a good team. An arm and a hand like that could lift weights. They could throw baseballs. Maybe they could wash windows.

Days came and went. The train ran between forests and lakes. It ran between wheat fields. A wind came up. It blew the arm and the hand right off the train.

Clink! Clinkety, clink, clink, clink!

The arm and the hand hit the track. On the last bounce the hand grabbed some lunch.

It was Hobo Bob’s lunch.
